Capital Wire - 5/18/09
"The special election on May 19 is drawing increasing attention to Emanuel Pleitez. With his fresh blood in Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley politics, some Washington insiders are sensing a possible tight finish with Pleitez and the two establishment politicians, Judy Chu and Gil Cedillo. The wild card is voter turn out."

89.3 KPCC NPR Radio - 5/15/09
"26-year-old congressional candidate from East Los Angeles is borrowing some pages from President Obama's campaign in his bid to upset two veteran politicians in the race. KPCC's Frank Stoltze reports that the campaign of Democrat Emanuel Pleitez has attracted enthusiastic young supporters from around the country."

Huffington Post - 5/14/2009
"The reverberation of the Obama generation continues to shake up Latino politics. The newest embodiment of the political shake-up is the quiet, stately, determined, and uncannily smart Emanuel Pleitez. Pleitez is the 26-year-old financial professional, turned Obama activist, turned upstart candidate, that is making a major league play for the seat once held by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis."

Huffington Post - 5/14/09
"One powerful young candidate is Emanuel Pleitez, a 26-year-old who's running in the May 19 special election to replace newly appointed Labor Secretary Hilda Solis in California's 32nd Congressional District, which covers East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. Pleitez's bid will serve as a model for young candidates everywhere."

National Journal - 5/13/09
"Pleitez, a 26-year-old native son turned financial analyst, has mounted an insurgent campaign in California's 32nd District modeled closely on Barack Obama's presidential bid, using the Web to tap small donors across the country and organize supporters in-district. While Pleitez hasn't matched the fundraising numbers put up by fellow Democrats Judy Chu and Gil Cedillo, he's raised enough online to make the established candidates -- Cedillo in particular -- take notice."

Los Angeles Times - 5/10/09
"He's just 26 and making his first election bid in a crowded field of candidates that includes two seasoned, well-financed officeholders -- just the sort of hopeful who usually gets lost in the pack. But Emanuel Pleitez has collected enough money -- much of it in online donations from across the nation -- to put on a substantive mail campaign, bolstered by an energetic staff of young volunteers. And, as he and his volunteers talk to voters in the 32nd Congressional District before the May 19 special election, opponents and politics-watchers alike are taking notice."

The Clarion Online - 5/6/09
"Pleitez is an advocate for education and believes everyone, especially minorities, should have equal access to it. Where the economy is concerned, he believes attention needs to be given toward solving the foreclosure crisis."

Though EyesOnObama has gotten pretty good at picking winners, we've never really gotten into the business of formally endorsing them. But this time, we just can't keep our mouths shut.

Stanford Daily - 4/22/2009
For the residents of East Los Angeles, El Monte, Monterey Park and West Covina, the economic plight of California's 32nd congressional district is a testament to the need for an administrative change. For Emanuel Pleitez '05, an East-L.A. native, rebuilding the 32nd district is an issue close to his heart.

LA Weekly - 4/16/2009
The top three Democratic contenders have raised about $1.5 million as of April 1. That third candidate, Emanuel Pleitez, has been making impressive gains -- at least in fundraising. Pleitez, a financial analyst, is only 26 years old, has worked at Goldman Sachs and comes with an Obama campaign pedigree -- having served on Obama's Treasury Department transition team.

San Gabriel Valley Tribune - 4/15/2009
The three top Democratic contenders in the race to represent the 32nd Congressional district have together raised nearly $1.5 million.

San Gabriel Tribune Blog - 4/15/2009
So, Cedillo's people were the first to send out a press release stating how much has been raised so far in fundraising. He's at $568,000. Then, Emanuel Pleitez announced that he has raised $152,777. And that latest to send her information was Judy Chu, who raised $770,167.

4/15/2009
LOS ANGELES - Today the Emanuel Pleitez Campaign for Congress announced that it has raised $152,777 in campaign contributions through the first quarter of 2009. That surprisingly large figure, coupled with a ground force of 25 full-time volunteers engaged in technology, finance, communications and grassroots outreach efforts, places the 32nd District candidate squarely in the middle of a three-way race for the vacant Congressional seat.

Eyes on Obama - 4/14/2009
EOO: Obviously, what's going on in Treasury right now is one of the more important focuses of the administration. So, was this one of the larger operations? Was this one of the more heavily "focused-on" projects going on at the time when you were there?

Somewhat less remarked-upon has been the candidacy of Emanuel Pleitez, a product of East Los Angeles and Woodrow Wilson High School, who matriculated at Stanford, joined the advisory board of Voto Latino (a group that encourages voter registration and engagement for the Latino community), worked for Democratic lawmakers like Antonio Villaraigosa, Tom Daschle and Hillary Clinton, and worked on the Obama transition team at the Treasury Department.

But don't let his age fool you. Just four years out of Stanford University, the East LA native has already worked with the U.S. Treasury Department Agency Review Team for the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition, and more locally in the offices of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa during his tenure on the Los Angeles City Council. He has also worked for Democratic heavyweights like US Senators Tom Daschle and Hillary Clinton, and was an organizer during Sen. John Kerry's 2004 presidential run.

Pleitez' success as a community organizer rests in his ability to respond to this leadership gap. Much like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta's organizing work in the 1960s, the myriad voter registration drives of 2008, community picnics, and endless canvasses by Pleitez and his team are bound to leave a lasting impression on the San Gabriel Valley. Already, the Pleitez campaign has over 20 full-time staffers and dozens of additional volunteers. It was the first campaign to open an office in the district and the first to launch a sophisticated website, replete with social networking plug-ins.

Immigration issues dominated the agenda when three of the leading Democratic candidates to replace new Labor Secretary Hilda Solis met face to face for the first time at a forum Thursday night.

Barack Obama, our community-organizer president, often talks about the need for change to come to Washington rather than from Washington, and the importance of bottom-up activism in keeping our political representatives on track. Indeed, history shows that lasting change is often built on grassroots foundations.

Emanuel Pleitez has been around a lot of politics since graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Los Angeles and Stanford University. But he's never run for office. Now, this 26-year-old financial analyst from the El Sereno neighborhood has set his sights on a national post.
